As the middle class of America continues to shrink, the contrast between the “haves” and “have-nots” becomes increasingly stark.  The book Ministries of Mercy, the Call of the Jericho Road, by Timothy J.Keller provides important guidance towards a righteous approach to mercy ministries for Christians of any theological leaning.  It is undeniable that increasing numbers of families are now dependent upon outside assistance in some form.  Whether from government welfare programs, non-profit community resource groups, family or faith-based organizations, a helping hand is in increasing demand!  This book does not stand alone in this particular arena, and given the fact that this volume was first published 25 years ago (with the second-edition released some 8 years later) it could be easily overlooked in favor of a more recent and trendy work.  This would be a mistake.

Ministries of Mercy provides content that is important for all generations and iterations of the Church while easily transcending the quarter century of radical cultural change that has transpired in the West since its first publication.  If I had not checked the date on the publisher page, I may not have noticed its age at all!  It is extraordinarily relevant to our current debates over income equity in the 21st Century…
